Joel on Software - The Guerrilla Guide to Interviewing
This is such an amazing post. The topic being the same as my previous post on this blog Interviews - Fact and Opinion. What I call skill (probably incorrectly), is what he calls aptitude; and what I call specialized knowledge is what he calls skill. Otherwise, Joel puts it far more eloquently that I ever could.
There one thing that I don't agree with him though:
- The 5 lines-of-code limit. I would like to see the programmer doing proper error checking and want to see how he organizes his program.
I should start using some of the stuff he says in my interviews too. Thanks Joel!

Bonded labour in "Silicon Valley"
Bonded to the loom
There are many arguments to child labour in India. One valid reason is that the families are so economically backward that the kids must work to feed themselves.
But when parents start sending their kids out into bonded labour, you know things are really bad. Is it shunning responsibility as parents? Or is that just a middle class measure that we have? Can we see this problem in the clear black and white?
If anything, this story shows how one step forward (World Bank loans for sericulture) may mean 2 steps back.

FedEx as Disk "Jockeys"
ACM Queue - A Conversation with Jim Gray
Imagine sending disks by post in this day and age!! Thats exactly what Jim Gray --storage guru-- is doing. Seems quite nifty to me. And 7 Megabytes per second ain't that bad.

The Grand ActiveX blind-siding
Microsoft's patent loss rattles tech community
Looks like we are all screwed! I prolly gotta go out and rewrite all my ActiveX code.
Sigh.. I just hope something good comes out of this. Something like making ActiveX more secure, and the whole active content stuff more standardized.
