The fading of the 20th century innovators

Carly's Gone. HP Celebrates.

Another truly innovative company in the doldrums :-(

It takes decades to build a culture of innovation, sometimes a full century (see AT&T post yesterday). It only takes a few years to destroy it completely.

There are many today who believe in individualism, the ability of these same HP people and Bell Labs people going elsewhere to innovate. But, it doesn't work. See what is happening at Lucent.

You need the environment, the rewards, the culture, the investment to innovate. You can't just take a bunch of smart people and expect innovation to flow.

Thankfully, the place of HP and AT&T is being taken by the likes of Google, that have acquired the money and the means to innovate meaningfully.

I am sad for HP, but optimistic for innovative companies as a whole!

"Mr. Watson, come here, I want you."

Are AT&T archives on the line?

AT&T has been the motherlode of most of the innovation we call IT today and then some more. The telephone, UNIX, C, C++, the transistor, laser, big bang, HDTV... the list goes on

SBC, please don't throw this history away. It is our collective legacy. Please!

Shivraj Patil - Nero reborn

The home minister of India fiddles when the country burns. Mr. Patil has the uncanny ability of saying the wrong thing at exactly the wrong time. A random news search sample below -

The Hindu, Aug 20, 2004 - Made during the height of the protests against AFSPA in Manipur

The Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil, said the Centre would take "appropriate action" if the situation did not improve in Manipur despite the State Government's efforts and the partial lifting of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Imphal city.

Without elaborating on the "appropriate action" and remaining non-committal on imposing President's rule in the State, Mr. Patil said: "There are many other options. What is appropriate action, you can read in the Constitution. The Constitution provides several options. Some different approach can be adopted. The State Government is trying; they are on the field and know more. We will not do anything which will embarrass the State Government at this moment."

rediff.com, Feb 10, 2005 - Made during midst of protests by Sikhs to make the Nanavati commission findings on 1984 anti-Sikh riots public

Make Nanavati report public: Sikh groups

"There is a procedure which has to be followed when the inquiries are constituted, when the reports are submitted and when the reports are examined by the government," Patil said.

Why does India need to tolerate such an incompetent home minister?

Firefox Live Bookmarks rocks!

Everyone has their favorite reason why they migrate and stay migrated to Mozilla/Firefox. Spyware, security, tabs and all that jazz. My reason is Live bookmarks and that I can get my news by just scrolling down the bookmark menus.

I just click on whatever headlines I care for. That simple!
